An inside look into Topflight Grain Cooperative’s cutting-edge grain processing facility

By: Erin Anderson

In the ever-evolving agricultural landscape, innovation and efficiency play a key role in meeting the demand for the highest quality grain in the global market. With the help of GROWMARK Commercial Construction, Topflight Grain Cooperative has emerged as a frontrunner in revolutionizing a new grain-handling landscape in Hammond, Illinois.

Five years ago, Topflight embarked on an extensive project to expand its location in Hammond, Illinois. The design of this new facility allows for the expansion of additional bushel storage without extensive modifications to the existing site. This flexibility will allow Topflight to expand and grow as necessary within the coming years.

The partnership between Topflight and GROWMARK played a crucial role in the development of this project. The previous success of their collaboration in Milmine, Illinois, led Topflight to approach GROWMARK once again for their expertise. The experience and knowledge of GROWMARK’s Senior Project Manager, Warren Odekirk, provided valuable insights and designs for the project. This collaboration extended far beyond the walls of GROWMARK, as multiple bids were considered for different aspects of the project, ensuring the best outcomes for Topflight customers.

Throughout the project, GROWMARK proved to be a fruitful partner. With regular communication from GROWMARK Commercial Construction’s Superintendent, Chris Coen, updates were shared regularly with various company stakeholders involved in the project.

Derrick Bruhn, General Manager of Topflight said, “Working with GROWMARK’s construction services has been great. Chris has been on site every day. If I’ve got a question, I can ask him, but you know, to be honest, it was a lot of hands-off from me. They took care of a lot of the project.”

Warren and Chris share a close and highly productive relationship that spans more than a decade. Having first collaborated in 2008, they developed a strong bond based on mutual respect and effective teamwork. Coen speaks highly of Odekirk stating, “Warren is probably one of the most knowledgeable people you’d ever come across as far as construction or just how these places operate or how they’re designed.”

Their harmonious partnership and shared dedication to their trade have not only fostered a productive work environment but also contributed to the success of this project.

An open house was held at the facility to showcase the completed project to customers, contractors, and individuals involved in making the project a reality. The feedback received from current customers has been positive and anticipation has been building concerning the increased dumping capacity and improved traffic flow, which are expected to enhance customer satisfaction. There are hopes to expand Topflight’s customer base beyond its small community.

“Through strategic planning, strong partnerships, and visionary leadership, Topflight has positioned itself for success in meeting the growing demands of the grain industry,” said Topflight General Manager Derrick Bruhn. He says the overall goal of this project is to improve business operations, attract more customers, and enhance efficiency in trucking and farming operations.

Topflight’s expansion represents a significant milestone for GROWMARK, FS, and its customers. Through strategic planning, strong partnerships, and visionary leadership, Topflight has set a benchmark for excellence. As they continue to evolve and innovate, Topflight’s commitment to serving their customers and driving the industry forward will continue to remain unwavering.
